All In Order Time Management Tips

1.     Establish routines.  Routines allow you to be proactive instead of reactive.

2.     Modify routines to fit your needs.  You may go through many versions before finding one that works for you.

3.     Schedule twice as much time as you think you’ll need for each task if you tend to underestimate the amount of time needed to complete tasks.

4.     Be consistent but not rigid in your routines so you can stay committed.  Make sure your routines have plenty of room for the unexpected.  For example, my weekly routine has 2 free days to finish anything that doesn’t get done on its scheduled day.

5.     Doing a task on a daily basis for about a month makes it a routine.  Once something is “routine” you will do it almost without thinking.  If you are overwhelmed, add one at a time.

6.     Try piggybacking something you need to do onto something you already do routinely.  For instance, file 5 papers every time you walk into your office or every day after lunch.

7.     Keep a task/to-do list so that you don’t have to worry about forgetting things.

8.     Set a timer to go off a few minutes before you have to leave so that you have time to get your rough thoughts on paper and write a note to remind yourself where you were in the process when you have to leave a project incomplete.  This is a better use of time than attempting to get your last few thoughts written out perfectly.

9.     Let go of perfectionism and appreciate the small things you accomplish.
